Industrial Photography | OSP Photographers in NJ

For the most part industrial photography is not very glamorous, but, at the same time it can be artistic.  The way we see it is how architectural photography is so inspiring, with the sharp angles and contrast against itself or the sky, industrial products can also have that feel.

Photography of industrial products is interesting and valuable to us as photographers. A few reasons for that, the first being lighting techniques. As professional product photographers know shooting a black object against a white background is always a lighting challenge. Not just the Industrial_OSPexposure, but getting details of the product you are photographing. Not to overexpose, or you will lose detail and blow it out, or underexpose which hides details.  This is where using a light meter is invaluable. Whether is’s location photography or in our studio for catalog online/web or print, we can work together to make some pretty awesome images for your marketing projects.

So three cheers for industrial products, and the people and places they are made!

Medical Device Product Photography | Our Studio Productions

Large or very small medical device photography is quite interesting on so many levels. It is also a learning experience. We learn about the product, it’s use, the people that work with them, and sometimes the people whom benefit from them.

There are times when we work with consultants in the field of which the product is actually used. Certain medical devices are so unknown to the non-medical person, that one may not even know how to hold it. This is where we rely on the medical consultant. Other times the art director or account person is well enough versed on the product for us to photograph it correctly.Medical product photography, pouch

Commercial photography of anything medical when working with models looks easy for them, but imagine holding your hands in such a way for extended periods of time. Most times in awkward positions too. All in all though is some of the most rewarding photo-shoots to work on. Always a coordinated effort by all concerned.    :)

Photographers for Hire | Advertising Photography NJ | Product Photography

As a commercial photography studio we never know what is around the corner for us. Especially, during the summer when most companies have their employees leaving for summer vacations. Sometimes we can be a tad slow during the summer, and other times busy. We love busy.  And we love what we do. Really love it, and  I think it shows in our photography.

Photo of flatware on black slate.

My business partner, photographer Diane Metz is a perfectionist. Shooting images is an art form as many professional photographers agree. As in a painting, when do you stop? How many more strokes?  The end result of an image just feels right. Often times the image looks great, but Diane sees something just not right. So she goes and adjusts the lighting or the product we are shooting.

In general advertising agencies normally send a representative to the photo studio to oversee the photoshoot to work with the photographer to get their vision to appear. This is always a win win situation, everyone ends up happy. Though, now we tend to email our images to the art director for their comments or and approval of the product image.  Less face time, but it works.Place setting photo for advertising

Product photography as I’ve stated before comes in many forms. From the smallest suture needle to a dining table, professional photography is a must if you are presenting on Power Point or using the image in an ad. Perspective buyers need to see an image. And a good one at that. It shows the commitment to your product line, and the quality of the image they see speaks loudly. With so much competition out there, you need to stand out proudly.

Place setting/tableware photography     Here in our Scotch Plains, NJ photography studio we always work with our clients to plan out, the best backgrounds, lighting and propping if required for each one of our images. Whether you are an advertising agency or a manufacturer we will help you achieve the very best look for your product.

Commercial Photographers | NJ | OSP

The end of the week, albeit a short one. A busy one for us too. Photographing products like: Furniture, jewelry and apparel. Every day is different, every day is good. Even when we are not actually shooting, we have loads to do. Files!! Image files are huge these days. Organizing our jobs in folders, and images in individual folders for easy retrieval. Part of a job on any photography project is also the post work. If you do it yourself or hire out (Which we do not do) someone to do it. Time not many of our clients really understand as being part of the billable time.

Being a photographer is much more than being the photographer. Most of all if you have a small business like ours. The wearer of many hats. Some we wear well and others not as much.

We photograph with a Hasselblad camera and a Hasselblad digital back.  The digital back’s files are HUGE. Try 80 megabytes. Hmm, yes they can be an issue of storage and manipulation. Load up the memory for these gorgeous files. Our quality is outrageously intricate, and sometimes downright intense. Always though a good thing. Especially, when photographing , well just about everything come to think of it.

Products are all kinds of things. Like for instance mushrooms! Or, fabrics, surgical screws, ice cream, noodles… Pasta Fresh on Wood Photo by OSP

Whatever it is we are shooting we just love it. Photography is not an easy business to be in, especially now, but here we are and here we are to stay.

Thanks for reading.

NYC Photography Talent in NJ

Thirty years of experience is a lot of time. When we think back on all the shoots we have produced, it boggles our minds. My sister with whom I work with, is our photographer. Our photography business has progressed over the many years and so has our knowledge. Knowledge of lighting, and learning the ever changing software programs that now in the digital age we must always acquire the skills and the hardware.

Studio_OSP_Rugs_Diane     Our newest acquisition is a Hasselblad CFV-50. Simply perfect. Of course it came with new software to learn, but as intuitive as most photography software is, the learning curve was not so painful. The Hasselblad digital back is also live, which helps us greatly when setting up shots, especially with props. Product photography can be a slow process, with the many changes to an image, in terms of lighting and propping. But, of course it depends greatly on what your product is. Live view with our new Hasselblad digital back speeds up the process by not having to click, capture or shoot as many images to get what you are looking for.

Our photography studio is located in New Jersey, near major roadways and mass transit. It’s an easy commute in and out of NYC. If you live in New Jersey and are looking for a photo studio for a product shoot, look in your backyard. Not literally, of course but seriously talent is here in New Jersey.

Local Product Photographer | Scotch Plains, NJ

OSP Jewelry Photography of The Paris BraceletThis is an image we photographed a few months ago for a relatively new company in the USA. We are very fortunate to have worked for them for several reasons, one of them being simply the beauty of the product. In product photography we can find ourselves photographing many different kinds of products in one day. On this particular day of shooting we worked exclusively on these beautiful bracelets.

Last week we ran the gamut on many products, ranging from fine custom made furniture to tablets for a pharmaceutical client. Large, tiny, glass to wood we photograph it. Even nuts and bolts! Really. Professional product photography is one of those things where, you get what you pay for. These days, EVERYONE is a photographer. Well, at least they think so. Much more thought goes into what is seemingly a ‘simple’ product shot. You just put it down, focus and shoot. Right? Not really how it works.

Many of our new clients are surprised by the set up time, and post computer time for a series of images. Much thought goes into photographing just about anything if it’s for advertising. I always ask our clients what is the end usage, because that tells us some very important information on set up, size and output just to name a few pieces of the puzzle that is to say, the specs of a project.

Glamour FlatwareOur commercial photography studio here in Scotch Plains, NJ is incredibly adaptable to several sets at a time if need be. Catalog photography in the back of the studio, jewelry in the front, and maybe even a couple pieces of furniture.

Rugs & Furniture Photography | OSP photography NJ

As a commercial photography studio we get asked to photograph all kinds of things. We photograph things like: Jewelry, tabletop place settings, packaging, stuffed animals, furniture blah, blah. Yes, many different kinds of ‘things’ otherwise known to us as, products. Products photographed for catalogs, websites and of course print.Ceramic Set on Washed Wood

Product photography incorporates studio pharmaceutical to on location photography of again all kinds of products. Can we specialize? Sure, but honestly, it’s a rare bird now a days. With in ‘house photography’ in so many corporations now, and advertising agencies we didn’t want to close the doors to other opportunities for us.

Once upon a time, we photographed mostly only food. Cooked and uncooked food photography, and raw ingredients, but then when we were asked to photograph tableware, it was a natural transition. Likewise, rugs to furniture. Or both for some customers in one shot. Lifestyle photography is very important especially now with online shopping. Giving the customer a sense of what your product will look like on their table at home, or on them.
