Commercial Photographers | NJ | OSP

The end of the week, albeit a short one. A busy one for us too. Photographing products like: Furniture, jewelry and apparel. Every day is different, every day is good. Even when we are not actually shooting, we have loads to do. Files!! Image files are huge these days. Organizing our jobs in folders, and images in individual folders for easy retrieval. Part of a job on any photography project is also the post work. If you do it yourself or hire out (Which we do not do) someone to do it. Time not many of our clients really understand as being part of the billable time.

Being a photographer is much more than being the photographer. Most of all if you have a small business like ours. The wearer of many hats. Some we wear well and others not as much.

We photograph with a Hasselblad camera and a Hasselblad digital back.  The digital back’s files are HUGE. Try 80 megabytes. Hmm, yes they can be an issue of storage and manipulation. Load up the memory for these gorgeous files. Our quality is outrageously intricate, and sometimes downright intense. Always though a good thing. Especially, when photographing , well just about everything come to think of it.

Whatever it is we are shooting we just love it. Photography is not an easy business to be in, especially now, but here we are and here we are to stay.

Thanks for reading.

NYC Photography Talent in NJ

Thirty years of experience is a lot of time. When we think back on all the shoots we have produced, it boggles our minds. My sister with whom I work with, is our photographer. Our photography business has progressed over the many years and so has our knowledge. Knowledge of lighting, and learning the ever changing software programs that now in the digital age we must always acquire the skills and the hardware.

Studio_OSP_Rugs_Diane     Our newest acquisition is a Hasselblad CFV-50. Simply perfect. Of course it came with new software to learn, but as intuitive as most photography software is, the learning curve was not so painful. The Hasselblad digital back is also live, which helps us greatly when setting up shots, especially with props. Product photography can be a slow process, with the many changes to an image, in terms of lighting and propping. But, of course it depends greatly on what your product is. Live view with our new Hasselblad digital back speeds up the process by not having to click, capture or shoot as many images to get what you are looking for.

Our photography studio is located in New Jersey, near major roadways and mass transit. It’s an easy commute in and out of NYC. If you live in New Jersey and are looking for a photo studio for a product shoot, look in your backyard. Not literally, of course but seriously talent is here in New Jersey.

Lifestyle photography is one of the most creative photo shoots in the realm of lighting. These two images are shot without any ambient light, just strobes. While sometimes we do use natural light on occasion, it’s mostly as a mood setting element. Just enough to bring in a feeling. Most importantly photographing tableware is about the pieces, but for lifestyle it’s more about the mood that the tableware can bring. Something warm and sometimes sexy.

Our Scotch Plains photo studio has great window light when we need it, and light blocking curtains when we don’t. Which is 95% of the time.

Commercial photography for us is packaging, retail displays, catalog and web. We have recently finished a rather exciting packaging project for tableware and online catalog and print pieces. Next blog I’ll post a few flat art samples.

Shooting apparel in our Scotch Plains studio.

All products are not the same, especially as far as photographing them go. At least photographing them. Product photography is not for the faint of heart. It can be a daunting task for the inexperienced. And, sometimes even for the experienced.

Sterling Silver Reflective

As most pros know, lighting our product is number 1. How are we going to achieve the most important aspect of our shoot, lighting. Not window lighting, not in a cube lighting, but professional flash/strobe lighting. The product is the star here, or as people in our field call it, the hero. Our hero can be a can of corn (Which incidentally is where we started out. I’ll save that for later), or the hero can be a highly reflective product, such as jewelry or metal serving pieces. The approach to these types of items needs to be a carefully designed one.

It is not 1-2-3. I can’t tell you how many times, we hear a client say, “Just throw it in, and shoot it.” Hmm, not so much. Some pieces just need a soft touch, because they move. Not a lot of fun photographing products, like dangly earrings or anything else supported, perhaps by clear wire. It takes time for them to settle down and behave. Furthermore, we don’t want to see ourselves in the reflection. Or sometimes we do, just for fun.  🙂

Photographers in New Jersey | NYC Taste | OSP Our Studio Productions

Photography Studio_OSP   Working in NJ, and being so close to NYC is one of the best benefits of living and working in our area. Yes, it can sometimes seem very crowded, and yes, it actually is jam-packed with people and cars. Commuting back and forth, most of the time seamlessly.

Our photography studio is in an ideal location; Scotch Plains, NJ. A very beautiful historical town, with lots of local restaurants, and easy access to thousands of others. Our Studio Productions moved into Scotch Plains a year and a half ago. Before that we were located in another historic town, Cranford. Our commercial photography business finds itself in a great location, serving many different clients from NJ and NYC. It’s so easy to travel to our studio, and if I do say so myself, worth it. 🙂studio shooting osp

One of our apparel clients walked in today to discuss an upcoming project and was stunned by the change in our studio. A completely different set up, and boy, do we move things around in here. Depending on what it is we are shooting, carpets, jewelry, stemware, restaurant ware, furniture, maps, ice cream…we need to move around. Sometimes, 3 to 4 sets at once. It can get crowded in here too, but it flows.

Rugs, Carpets and Home Accessory Photography | New Jersey Photographers OSP

Anyone, that knows Diane and I from Our Studio Productions Photography, knows that we love what we do. Camera in hand, focusing on a product. Over the years, OSP Photography has photographed a multitude of various products, that sometimes make it hard to remember all of them.

So, when a prospective client asks us if we photographed something in particular, I have to pause a minute to go through my mind, and remember. Hundreds, or rather thousands of files to recall. Case in point; a prospective client of ours sent us an email inquiring about photography of their rugs. Below are the test shots we did for them, including retouching one into a stock photo. Rug in Stock Photo

Flat Perspective Photo of RugLooking at these sample images would you think that it is as simple as putting the rug down, and clicking the picture? It does look like that, but…It did take a bit of thought, and time to get the lighting even, and color accurate. These images will be used for their website, which is very well put together and easy to navigate.

Product photography is not as easy as one might think. Even the simplest, supposedly easy product shot is, well not always so easy. Lighting is everything. Daylight, or window light is not always the best solution. It is definitely a great way to photograph certain pieces, but not all.

Jewelry Photography  |  OSP Professional Photography

Spiritual message necklaceI do not know  you, but if you are reading this OSP blog you must have some kind of interest in jewelry, or jewelry photography or just photography in general.

Here are a few samples of images we took for a entrepreneur. Her designs are quite beautiful, and the pieces are very well made. She opted for a professional photographer for her images to promote a dream she had. A visualization, that came to life.

One image is a Ask Believe Receive sterling silver pendant, and the other image is of that same pendant in gift box. Nice presentation.

Photography of jewelry is certainly not as easy as one might think. Just the placement of a piece can take much time. Especially, a long necklace. Sometimes the links can have a mind of their own, and want to go where they want to go. It is our job to take the time for perfect placement. Lighting. Oh, no not lighting! Yes, jewelry lighting. Silver needs to look like silver, and gold like gold. Gems need to have a brilliance and clarity to them. Special attention to these details is so important to your sales.

We photograph in our Scotch Plains, NJ commercial photography studio. This is our new location. Previously, we were in Cranford, NJ. This space we now have is very open, and easily accessible to  major roadways, and mass transit.

Thanks for reading this post of jewelry photography.
